Tom Murphy has been a restaurateur and wine aficionado in Atlanta for more than 35 years. You can find him most days at his well known restaurant Murphy’s, where Virginia Avenue and North Highland meet, and you can also find a fantastic gem of a wine shop there, too. Tom spent some time thinking about what the perfect wines would be for Father’s Day weekend. Here are his top five choices:
1. NV Laurent-Perrier Brut, Champagne, France priced at $41.99
According to Tom this is an elegant man’s Champagne. Crisp, clean and citrusy he would pair this with brunch dishes like Egg’s Benedict or French Toast. It scores 91 points with Wine Enthusiast and is worth the splurge to treat Dad.
2. Red Car Rose, Sonoma, California $24.99
Dry and aromatic, this is perfect for day drinking. Tom thinks this wine is perfect for a day at the pool, a picnic, or a backyard barbecue while watching the Braves Game. Flavors of tangerine oil, grapefruit and bing cherries, this is day drinking wine at its finest and affordable for a crowd.
3. Argyle Reserve Pinot Noir, 2014, Willamette Valley, Oregon $29.99
For Tom, this glass of pinot is perfect for a summer afternoon and early dinner. Served at cellar temperature, this would be his pick for an evening outside on a patio with grilled salmon and fresh vegetables from the local farmer’s market. Toasted, rich and earthy with flavors of sweet cherry and red heart plum this is a silky wine with firm tannins and a well-bodied mouth feel. Practically the perfect pinot.
4. Chappelet Mountain Cuvee, Napa Valley 2013 $34.99
This Napa Valley blend of the Bordeaux varietals is rich and enticing with layers of blueberries, blackberries, baking spice and toasted wood. Bay leaf, black pepper and a hint of dark chocolate can be found on the nose and Tom would suggest this be served with a nice steak from the grill or maybe even a Cuban cigar (it is Father’s Day after all.) It drinks like a much more expensive wine than it actually is.
5. Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley, Sonoma $59.99
A wonderful expression of Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, rich, elegant, fruit filled and well balanced, this wine would be the highlight of any Father’s Day Dinner. Tom is a fan of this Bordeaux style cabernet sauvignon, that is crafted with care and with old world style in Sonoma, Calif. This is a wine that makes a statement with dinner or on its own.
