Dual Practice Manager, Thomas Eye Group
Ashley says see likes to stay behind the scenes, but her role as a dual practice manager for Thomas Eye Group has put her at the forefront of most aspects of managing two successful locations.
Growing up in a military family, Ashley moved often but has always considered her home to be Newnan, Georgia.
“I was raised most of my life by a single mother who over the years has shown me what a strong, motivated woman looks like,” she says.
That would serve to build Ashley’s ambition for achievement. She started a family early and without a formal college education, and many thought she would never succeed. She turned that doubt into her determination and set out to prove them wrong. She enrolled in a dental school and became a certified dental assistant. And she was just getting started.
After several disappointments and challenges, she persevered and found her way into Thomas Eye Group as a medical assistant scribe in April 2009. She had no experience in ophthalmology.
“I was determined to learn everything I could,” she says.
And that is exactly what she did. Ashley would then move through various roles within the company—contact lens technician, ophthalmic assistant and eventually board-certified optician. While still at the Newnan office, the practice manager was retiring, and he encouraged Ashley to apply for the position. In 2016 she took on that role and assisted the company with its move to a new Newnan location. In 2018, she added the role of practice manager of the new Midtown location to her growing responsibilities. She now manages both locations.
Ashley says what she loves most about her role at Thomas is being a part of the care of our patients.
“When you have a small part in giving someone the ability to have a better quality of life through their sight, it is truly a gratifying feeling.”
Ashley describes herself as driven and ambitious but quiet. She is a supporter and a giver. Maybe this comes from being a young mother of two daughters and having her mother as a role model.
Outside of the office, Ashley enjoys spending time with her husband, Danny; their children, Hope and Kaylee; and her step-children, Taylor and Carson. She and Danny build farm tables and porch swings in their free time.
Dr. Sumayah Taliaferro
Dermatologist/Founder, Atlanta Dermatology and Aesthetics
Dr. Sumayah Taliaferro is an Atlanta native. She grew up with a nurturing mother who was a teacher for 30 years and surrounded by a loving family of grandparents, aunts and uncles. She gives credit to the high expectations of her teachers with helping her become who she is today. As a child, she developed a love of dance and spent many nights and weekends in dance classes.
“I believe that through dance, I developed part of the discipline and confidence to succeed in many endeavors, including medicine,” she says.
Dr. Taliaferro had a love of science early on and was accepted into a special math and science program at Philips Academy, one of the oldest boarding schools in the country, in Andover, Massachusetts. There she spent three summers while in high school. This experience strengthened her passion for science.
“After becoming a semifinalist for the national Westinghouse Science Competition, I knew that I had what it takes to become a physician or research scientist,” she says. “Later, I chose a career in dermatology because it combines my love of art and medicine. In dermatology, I enjoy the ability to blend science with an artful approach to enhance or achieve beautiful skin.”
Dr. Taliaferro attended the Alpert Medical School at Brown University. She then trained at Yale and completed her residency in dermatology at Howard University.
Dr. T. opened Atlanta Dermatology and Aesthetics in 2015 to provide comprehensive care in medical and cosmetic dermatology. In addition to providing treatment and surveillance of skin cancer, the practice is known for providing innovative and thoughtful solutions for severe acne, aging skin, alopecia and pigmentary disorders. They also offer their patients a wide range of cosmetic procedures.
“My team and I seek to provide a high level of service and personalized care,” she says.
Dr. Taliaferro still has a love of dance and continues to take dance classes. When not serving her patients she enjoys reading, writing, supporting the arts community in Atlanta, serving at church and participating in activities with the Links, Inc. and her sorority.”
