Designer and custom jewelry for all tastes and styles

Highland Diamond, which opened its doors in 2017 right here in Midtown, is not your average jewelry store. While it does feature beautiful jewelry and stylish watches, this boutique store specializes in custom-designed pieces, including the repurposing and repair of heirloom items that have been passed down for generations.

There is a full-time jeweler on staff daily, so repairs can be done while customers wait. There’s even a window into the bench room so they can see their jewelry being cleaned and worked on. It always stays on site; nothing is ever sent out.

Its owner, John Rothermel, a California native who moved to Alpharetta in 1992, attended the Gemological Institute of America, and because of his talent, is often commissioned to custom design significant pieces of jewelry. Besides Rothermel, there is an entire staff of designers who can take what customers find online or in catalogues and reproduce it. Or, shoppers can choose some pieces that are already in the store and ask them to integrate the designs or certain aspects of the designs into a new piece.

They can also design any piece of jewelry that people can dream up. All their customers have to do is describe what they’re looking for, and it can easily be sketched out on a pad. Once this is done and measurements taken, this information is then transferred a computer program to digitally render the piece. This way, clients can see it from all sides. The other unique thing they do is 3D wax printing of custom piece so customers can see and feel the exact height, width and design of the pieces. This is done before the gold is cast and stones are set to ensure the customer is getting exactly what they want.

Another popular trend right now is custom cases for Apple watches. The designers at Highland Jewelry have even created a Diamond Encrusted Apple watch case.

“People like to have gold and diamonds and bling on their watches, so we created many different cases that can be attached to an exterior of an Apple watch,” said Rothermel.

Highland Jewelry is also a licensed seller of the Gabriel Collection, made by New York fashion designers who produce modern, clean, and bright pieces. The collection consists of a whole line of jewelry items such as earrings, pendants, rings, and bracelets, and all are in stock. The craftsmanship and stones are high quality, but they sell at an affordable price.

“You’re not paying high-end fashion prices, but you’re getting all the quality with it.” And it’s not just diamonds, but pearls and other gem stones too.

In addition to being an expert in all types of diamond and color stone jewelry, Rothermel has a strong affinity for fine wines and bourbons, so shoppers also get to experience some of the finest whiskeys in the world, all given complimentary. Or, if patrons prefer a nice glass of champagne or a mimosa, those are ready to be served every day as well.

Because of his interest in artwork, another unique aspect of the store is that it has a rotating selection of fine art on the walls.

“Aside from the jewelry store, my interests revolve around the more beautiful and aesthetically pleasing things the world has to offer. These things tend to interact with myself and my clients rather than being mutually exclusive,” said Rothermel.

The goal of Highland Diamond, he said, is to be a friendly, fine jewelry store that the neighborhood can trust with all of their jewelry needs. It also accepts items on consignment.
