Scooter Regulations

The Atlanta City Council recently approved rules requiring scooter companies to prevent the popular form of Midtown transportation from being randomly placed on city sidewalks. In addition, permits will need to be obtained to operate the businesses. The city now requires scooters be parked upright on sidewalks in a manner that allows pedestrians five feet of space. Safety concerns were also discussed regarding helmets, speed limits and education of local laws.

Rebecca Serna, executive director for the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, told the council she shared some of the safety concerns regarding electric scooters. But Rebecca said the riders will continue using sidewalks because the city’s streets are in desperate need of improvement.

“They are going to do it on the sidewalks as long as they don’t feel safe in the streets,” she said.

Atlantis Station Expansion

A new office tower is underway as construction began recently in the ever-expanding Atlantic Station foothold. Atlantic Yards, developed by Hines, is scheduled for completion in 2020.

The first phase of Atlantic Yards’s construction will feature a three-story parking deck, topped with two office towers. The $189 million-plus project will be located on 17th Street and the Connector. Also in the works is a 20,000-square-foot street-level structure for restaurant and retail endeavors. Hines is currently also developing T3 West Midtown. T3 refers to the Timber, Transit and Technology design of the 230,000-square-foot office space scheduled for a September opening. Framed with nothing but timber, the modern, seven-story structure will be the second of its kind in the U.S. by Hines.
